Jennifer Biddle Returns to Chicago

Oppidian Theatrical’s resident playwright, Jennifer Biddle, returns to Chicago for a one-night engagement. Jennifer will be at the Prop Theater at 2PM on Sunday the 28th of February. Ms. Biddle has teamed up with Curious Theatre Branch to be part of The Church of the New Play a weekly series curated by the Rhinofest. The Church of the New Play is dedicated to new and emerging voices in theater and performance. The Rhinofest has decided to perform a stage reading of Ms. Biddle’s work Little Man and His Wife.

Peter-Dinklage-600x400

Unfortunately Mr. Dinklage will not be attending

Peter is a little person with some outrageous responsibilities, including getting his siblings together for the reading of their estranged father’s will. His sister Evee is also little, needing succor and a viable kidney; Randall is normal sized and needs Peter to explain his own wife’s anger to him. But first he has to coax his d
elusional love from the closet where she sits with some denizens out of her private world. In fact, they’d like a word with him….

Peter could rise to the occasion—or he could grab his wife’s hand and scram, running to the place she normally strolls….

Please join Ms. Biddle at Prop Theater, 3502 N. Elston Ave, for The Church of the New Play at 2pm on February 28th.

Tickets are $15 at the door, or pay what you can, or $12 in advance. Coffee, doughnuts and discussion will follow the performance.

It’s been over a year now since we last posted. Why, you may ask? Well due to opportunity the Oppidian staff has had to relocate to the British Isles for the foreseeable future. We have been taking the time to acclimate top our new surroundings and hopefully we will be back to entice you with new productions from across the pond. Please keep watching this and our other spaces for updates and more information.

The Cairn: Cast and Crew – Director: Adam Dodds

adamfacecairnAdam was overjoyed when Jennifer Biddle asked him to direct The Cairn.  This is his first production after a full-year furlough from the theatre, prior to which he most recently directed Jenn’s play Next and Her Savior at Rhinofest 2012.  Having grown up in the Centerfold or the Crack of the Pennsylvania road map (depending on the day), Adam studied Musical Theatre at Point Park University when it was just a college, and spent a few years telling ghost stories in New Orleans before moving here.  In Chicago, Adam has contributed as a director, actor, costume designer, and producer with Clove Productions, Chicago Mammals, Halcyon, Caffeine, Steep, Speaking Ring, Quest Ensemble, and other great organizations.  Adam’s own imprint, BendsInister Theatre, produced one glorious play a while ago (Melody Von Smith’s Bonegrinders) and will, hopefully, try it again sometime.  Thanks to Jenn, Ryan, Shawn, other Ryan, and especially Amy and Erik for…I dunno, whatever it is that they do.

Oppidian is very excited to have Adam as the director for our inaugural production, The Cairn. The Cairn is part of this year’s Rhino Fest. Advanced tickets are on sale now at the Rhino Fest website.

The Cairn: Cast and Crew – Playwright: Jennifer Biddle

2012-03-04 08.35.24Jennifer Biddle was born in Evanston, and moved to Brooklyn, NY a few years after that. Her very first gig as Writer/Director/Actor/Producer was in first grade with The Mice Find a Home, a play based on the book of the same name. A good deal later, she graduated from Montclair State University with a BFA in Acting/Directing and worked with the Pennsylvania Reparatory Company for two years. In 1993, she moved to Chicago. She wrote and performed her first two-woman show, Alma’s Pantsuit with Karen Skibell in 1995. Her first one-woman show, titled Jenny Jenny Bang Bang, opened at Live Bait Theatre in the summer of 1997. She’s written and performed There I Was in Live Bait’s Filet of Solo Festival; Jackie and Jenn’s Whirlwind Crimestopping Spree with Jackie Wolk at Live Bait; We Have To Make This Look Like an Accident with Barrie Cole at the Bryant-Lake Bowl & Theatre in Minneapolis; and The Martyr at the Free Street Theater for the 2001 Rhino Fringe Festival with Curious Theatre Branch.  Her collected monologues were performed in the Great Beast Production of And Then I Wrote… Her plays An Aspect of God and Next and Her Savior were produced by Michael Martin and debuted at the Prop Theatre for 2012’s Rhino Fest with Curious. The depths of Jenn’s psyche can be plumbed at jennbiddle.blogspot.com
